Description
Stability test is required the Regulation 1223/2009 on cosmetic products (Annex 1 of the Part A). It's necessary for making the Product Information File (PIF) .
The purpose of the stability test is to ensure that the physical, chemical and microbiological characteristics comply with the established quality requirements, and to determine its functionality, appearance and safety during the time it is subjected to handling, transport and storage under appropriate conditions.
When to do it?
This test must be performed whenever a new product is to be placed on the market. However, it should be repeated whenever there is a change in the formulation, packaging or manufacturing process (because it may affect the stability of the product).
Why make it ?
Ensure that the physical and chemical qualities of the product and its safety (microbiological analysis) are maintained until the end of the shelf life of the product.
In addition, by carrying out this test we determine the minimum product life or the (PAO).
How to do it ?
This test can be performed in two ways:
- Accelerated stability: due to time constraints, this type of test is performed to ensure the stability of the cosmetic product. It consists of placing the cosmetic product at high temperatures for 3 months, to control during this time different parameters. A thawing test is also carried out to assess the stability of the product during transport.
- Real-time stability: consists of storing the product under normal conditions until the end of its shelf life (1-3 years). Throughout this period, physical, chemical and microbiological tests are carried out to assess the stability of the product.
What kind of cosmetics to try?
All The cosmetics there are no exceptions such as the Challenge Test. However, not all products require the same tests; those with a low microbiological risk may not require microbiological testing..
